Sorna is an old instrument that is performed by blowing in it. Abdolghader Maraghei’s definition on Sorna is: this instrument is made of a white and black pipe(Ney) its sound reaches more beyond the other instruments.Eskandar Beig has a narration on Sorna and Sorna players on Safavieh’s period that all princes in the Palace were interested in learning Sorna. Sorna is an instrument that is performed by blowing in it. It has seven holes on the top and one under. It’s sound’s variety is something more than one octave. It is made of wood. One peace called Bik is also joined to it. Sorna has three types: small, medium and big. It is usually between 43 cm to 51 cm. Sorna is used both in mourning ceremonies and weddings as well. Since it makes a very strong and high sound, they use it in open areas. One great and well-known performer on this instrument is Shahmirza Morady. As it was mentioned previously, it stands in the Aerophon’s category. Sorna and its different parts Sorna consist of some main and some secondary parts.
Main parts are:
1) The main body (horn). It is the biggest part and is the same as a trumpet. There are some holes that are placed on the thin part of the Sorna’s body. This part is made of Konar and apricot’s wood.
2) Gar: It’s a two-horned wood that enter Sorna from the side where the performer blows in it. In fact this part is an intermediary part for joining the body and the other parts for making sound. This part is made of apricot and Kikem’s wood.3) Bar( Mil): This part is made of copper and is a intermediary part for joining Ghomish and Gar. The length for this part is about 6 centimeters.
4) Sadaf: This part is placed on Mil and the performer put his mouth there. This part closely keeps the performer’s mouth and never let the blowing wind to be useless; so that the performer would be able to play without cutting the sound or the wind. In fact the inhaling wind that is done by nose, would be pushed into Sorna through mouth’s muscles .
5) Bik: In fact this part is Ghomish itself that is called Bik or Pig by folks. This part is a double parts Ghomish that is made of a kind of pipe (Ney).
One end of this part is fastened with some thread. This part is placed on Mil. Moreover, Sorna would be decorated
with some metals and chains.
These decorations can also protect Sorna from cracks.
